They include navigation and control systems (such as the moving map display, displays of current air speed, airspeed altimeter, and yaw rate); communications and navigational display systems (such as the air traffic control display); engines and flight instruments (such as a display showing a number of details of engine performance); and instrument landing systems (such as landing approaches on runway lights). They may also include some electronic data displays.

Because it's the most invisible part. Because most people don't think of it or know what to ask for it. Because pilots and controllers (who control the aircraft) don't spend time thinking about it, and they don't feel they have time to think about it. Because it's (at least indirectly) what prevents systems from failing. Because pilots don't always like to focus on it, because they don't get asked about it, because there's an awkward language barrier. And because, without it, one of the largest human-caused technical errors ever could have happened. Avionics systems have a history of causing problems, but many are preventable. And even if they're not, even if they're only partially prevented, the fact that they were fixed is still an improvement.
