Engine Oil Cleanliness
A. Technical Data Oil Cleanliness Requirement
(1) These requirements present the various minimum cleaning, handling, storage, and packaging requirements for achieving and maintaining product item and system cleanliness to ensure the necessary product integrity.
B. Cleanliness Requirements for Oil Wetted Parts and Assemblies
(1) Equipment or materials that are used to handle, assemble, or package the components or hardware should be clean to prevent contamination.
(2) Equipment and facilities must be clean and free from debris that may adversely affect the cleanliness of parts and assemblies.
(3) During engine maintenance, the exposed oil system parts and openings should be protected from the elements such as sand, dust, and airborne debris when possible using an enclosed assembly area or portable cover.
(4) Smoking, eating and drinking are not permitted in the assembly area.
(5) Engine openings and applicable hardware should be covered with plastic sheets when left unattended. Cloths, gloves, paper, or other foreign contaminate must not be inserted into the oil system components or openings.
(6) Protective caps should be used for open oil tubes and other similar parts. Protective caps must be clean, not generate debris, be visible and of a size, color and shape that would preclude inclusion in a part or assembly.
(7) Bag and seal all oil wetted parts when not installed in the engine.
(8) Oil system parts and components removed from an engine that has experienced mechanical distress, chip collector debris or oil debris monitor indications may require enhanced cleaning procedures and oil cleanliness inspection per the associated Clean, Inspect and Repair Manual.
C. When Installing new or Replacement Oil wetted Hardware
(1) Parts should be visually inspected prior to installation on the engine to ensure the packaging integrity has not been compromised and there is no evidence of gross damage due to shipping and removal from the packaging.
(2) Ensure procedures are in place to instruct applicable personnel in the proper handling of engine hardware.
(3) Ensure parts are not removed from sealed packaging prior to assembly.
(4) Every effort should be made to reduce the amount of time between opening of the sealed packaging and installation onto the engine.
(5) Wear clean and lint free gloves when unpacking, handling and assembling oil wetted hardware on the engine.
