E-rudder fitted instead of the Rudder Mechanical Controls
Last May 2021, this prototype of Airbus A321Neo (Registration: D-AVXB, MSN: 8639) performed a flight test with the E-rudder fitted instead of the Rudder Mechanical Controls, therefore, let me introduce you to the Electronic Rudders (E-rudder) on the A320Neo family!
Rudder mechanical controls have been the standard in the A320 family since its entry into service in 1988. They consist of a mechanical linkage between a set of two pedals connected together in the cockpit and the three hydraulic servo-actuators fitted in the tail to actuate the rudder.
Airbus, through the E-rudder program, will replace the mechanical interface with an electrical interface, leading to saving up to 40 kg with the removal of several mechanical fixtures and three flight control computer units (FAC 1, FAC 2, SEC 3) which means a significant maintenance cost reduction and higher reliability.
There are some modifications and new equipment to bear in mind, such as a new rudder and brakes pedals unit, one backup control module, one backup power supply, and software modifications in SECs, ELACs, and other computers.
By early 2024, the E-rudder will become standard on the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo, nevertheless, it is not retrofittable for the in-service fleet and the CEO A320 Family will not be proposed for the E-rudder.
Is the E-rudder a game-changer? Of course it is, the E-rudder will significantly alter the way things are done adding more benefits to the A320Neo program.
