Color of the bonnet on a fire hydrant has a purpose
Did you know that the color of the bonnet on a fire hydrant has a purpose ? The color of the bonnet is used by firefighters to determine the water that can be supplied by that particular hydrant. The attached picture shows the color coding system and the water available per color.
The barrel of the fire hydrant also represents important information for the fire department. In most fire districts a yellow barrel hydrant represents a fire hydrant that is owned and maintained by a water district. A red barrel hydrant would represent a hydrant that is owned and maintained privately or by a commercial fire protection system on a commercial property.
This information is key for fire service personnel.
